Transforming the energy supply chain, one part at a time

by Invenergy

This year, Invenergy opened its Center of Excellence (CoE) — an industry-leading training and manufacturing facility that brings four crucial business functions under one roof.
One of those functions is our new Central Machine Shop — or our onsite repair and refurbishment shop. When combined with an expanded Parts and Distribution Warehouse, Invenergy Services is reinforcing supply chain reliability for our customers and strengthening domestic manufacturing skills that enable customers to access refurbished parts.
Situated alongside our training facility and 24/7 Generation Control Center, the CoE Central Machine Shop and Parts Warehouse provides our customers and power plants with American-made supply chain solutions that optimize operations.

To bring the Central Machine Shop to life, Invenergy invested in significant infrastructure upgrades and planning. The facility was outfitted with two overhead cranes to support the safe and efficient handling of large components and underwent a thorough analysis of current and future repair opportunities to ensure the shop was correctly sized and equipped. A dedicated paint booth was installed to preserve the appearance and longevity of refurbished shafts, while extensive research went into specifying and procuring specialized assembly equipment. The warehouse area was completely refreshed — with a new coat of paint, updated flooring, and improved lighting — creating a clean, well-lit environment that reflects the professionalism and precision of the work performed within.
As a complement to project site inventory, these expanded capabilities enable our customers to:
  • Repair critical energy components efficiently to minimize downtime and optimize operations.
  • Source long lead and critical components directly from the CoE — avoiding waiting for lengthy overseas deliveries.
  • Well-stocked, on-site inventory of major components
  • Strengthen domestic supply chains
  • Optimize performance of their energy centers
  • Improve U.S. energy independence
Data from Invenergy-operated power plants informs the inventory housed at the CoE and will help improve forecasting for future inventory needs, increasing the availability of parts when customers need them. Additionally, review of failure modes completed via ‘tear downs’ helps Invenergy’s engineers suggest improvements for equipment refurbished and manufactured at the Invenergy Central Machine Shop.

As a company founded by a leading innovator, entrepreneur and energy industry pioneer, it is not a surprise that this industry-leading idea was developed by one of our own. Nick Falasz, director of operations engineering at Invenergy, developed the idea and initial business use case for Invenergy's Machine Shop six years ago during the company's Innovation Challenge, where employees are encouraged to submit ideas to improve the company’s operations in some way.
“I started here 10 years ago, and there’s always been a focus on staying ahead of the curve,” Falasz said “When the Innovation Challenge was announced in 2019, it got me thinking about how we could level up our field operations team.”
Six years after Falasz’s submission to the Innovation Challenge, the CoE’s Central Machine Shop opened its doors and represents more than just operational excellence. Operated by Invenergy Services employees, including Robert Wilkins, manager of shop operations, and Dave Hesse, facility director, the machine shop is a testament to Invenergy’s culture of innovation and an example of the forward-thinking mindset that enables our delivery of cleaner, more reliable, affordable energy.
